“A student centered approach to the Junior Cycle Curriculum"

The Junior Certificate School’s Programme (JCSP) is a national programme sponsored by the Department of Education and Science and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment. It is based on the concept that all young people are capable of achieving real success in school, and they can have a positive experience of education, if the conditions are favourable. Currently the programme is operating in 150 schools throughout the country.

It is not an alternative to the Junior Certificate. The programme aims to ensure that all participating students sit the same Junior Certificate examination as their peers in as many subjects as they can succeed in.

JCSP focuses on improving the literacy and numeracy skills of students and at McEgan College we run numerous initiatives in 1st and 2nd Year in order to achieve this such as: Word Millionaire, Reading Challenge, DEAR, Paired Maths and Number Millionaire.

At McEgan College we help students to develop positive attitudes towards learning and believe in celebrating their successes.  It may be a postcard home, a celebration event attended by parents, a certificate or a prize but all of these allow students to realise that their efforts are valued and recognised.

Initiatives for 2012/13

Paired Maths

We are running a paired maths programme with Ms. Noonan’s first year maths class.  Each first year student is paired with a TY student.  Every Thursday TY students join the 1st year maths class and provide tutoring to the younger students.  This is an excellent programme which not only helps to provide the numeracy skills of students by providing individual support, it also allows first year students to build positive relationships with older students.  The programme will run throughout the year and all students involved will receive a certificate in May.  We also will have a celebration event as a reward for all those students involved.

Calligraphy

Ms. Morris’s second year English class are currently working on a calligraphy project which focuses on their junior certificate novel The Hunger Games.  Students are being taught calligraphy and are using their new skills to create visuals such as scrolls, ID cards and posters. All of these will form part of the school’s entry into the JCSP Make a Book Competition in March.  The calligraphy visuals will be accompanied by a piece of art which is symbolic of the novel and this will be made by second year students under the guidance of Mr. O Riordan.

Literacy Medley

At McEgan College we endeavour to promote reading for fun and also as a way of improving the basic literacy skills of all our students.  Our literacy programme this year is divided into four major initiatives:

  • Keyword Week
  • Drop Everything And
  • Who wants to be a millionaire?/ Reading Challenge
  • Read Aloud

Study Skills

Ms. Bourke will be running a study skills workshop with students in February.

Music

Ms. O Regan will be using JCSP funding to run a workshop on musical performance.
