Junior Cert Home Economics
The Junior Cert Has Begun
On Monday 18th the 3rd Year Home Economics class completed 50% of their Junior Certificate 2016. Each student was required to prepare, cook, serve and evaluate a selections of dishes. Tasks are issued by the department of Education 3 weeks before the exam and the students must select dishes appropriate to each task. The tasks include a wide range of themes including vegetarianism, cooking for family celebrations, fish cookery, using different types of flour, cooking for special dietary requirements e.g. anaemia and healthy meals for school canteens.
The students spent many hours both at home and in school, including their Easter Holidays practicing their skills before their exam. All this extra work proved very worthwhile as each student produced a very impressive dish on the day of their exam. Some of the dishes produced include: Fresh Fruit Flan, Baked Hake with Duchesse Potatoes, TVP burgers, Berry Fool, Chocolate Pots, A Variety of Muffins and Scones, a selection of Stir-fry’s and Soups and many, many more appetising and nutritious meals. Well done to all.
The craft projects which the students had completed earlier in the year were also examined on the day. The cookery exam plus the project account for 50% of their Junior Cert. The remaining 50% is from the written paper in June.
